Ovecome Your Writing Resistance Workshop
Saturday, May 18, 2013
If you’ve ever wondered why it’s so hard to write sometimes or if you want to write more – more often, more freely or more effectively – you need to understand what’s happening in your brain.
Writing resistance (which can include writer’s block, procrastination, paralysis, perfectionism, postponing, distractions, self-sabotage, excessive criticism, overscheduling and endlessly delaying your writing) is NOT caused by lack of will power, discipline, ambition or imagination.
Resistance is caused by instinctual responses hard-wired into your brain. Fortunately, you can retrain and rewire your brain. When you understand the basics of how your brain works, you can develop habits and strategies that will move you through the frustration and anxiety of resistance.
We’ll use freewriting, brainstorming, two-person activities, exercises, appreciative inquiry and creative process play to explore concepts and practice techniques. This class will give you the understanding you need to make small commitments that will pay big rewards in your writing life. The teaching artist’s book, Around the Writer’s Block, is recommended reading, but not required.
Who should attend?
- Adults 18 and over
- All levels welcome
About the Instructor
Rosanne Bane, M.A., is a Creativity Coach and author of Around the Writer’s Block: Using Brain Science to Solve Writer’s Resistance and Dancing in the Dragon’s Den. Drawing on her fascination with the brain and extensive reading of brain science, Rosanne translates scientific concepts into easy-to-understand language that writers can apply immediately. For over 20 years as a teacher and coach, Rosanne has given thousands of writers the tools to bust through blocks and other forms of resistance, build effective writing habits and achieve their writing dreams and goals. She uses interactive (aka fun) teaching methods to engage writers at Loft Literary Center, the University of St. Thomas, the University of Minnesota and other programs. Learn more about Rosanne and her methods on her blog, Bane of Your Resistance.
